Sari Flutters - Original Oil Painting by Raelene Shea

Saree Flutters -48 " X 36" Original Oil Painting by Raelene Shea -  inspired by the many beautiful sarees worn by Sri Lankan ladies in the Tangalle area of Sri Lanka. I enjoy watching the flutter in the wind as it is pulled over the head to provide shade or cover from rain. These sarees are ever varied in colors and patterns and can be used as sarees, or the 6 meters of fabric can be made into other beautiful pieces of clothing. I like to have them made into colorful tunics and trousers.

This oil on cotton was prepared with 4 layers of black gesso. I like the appearance of transparency that the black underpainting gives to the piece. The challenge was to have the viewer experience the flow of the fabric as the wind picked it up while the wearer pulled it over her head.
